Saadia Doyle scored 17 points and collected 22 rebounds and Zykia Brown added 20 points as Howard (6-8, 2-1) ended a 12-game losing streak to Coppin State (4-9, 1-2) with a 59-45 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over the visiting Eagles on Monday night. Freshman Leola Spotwood led the Eagles with 16 points; sophomore Jeanine Manley had 12 points and 12 rebounds.
More women: Morgan State (5-9, 2-1 MEAC), which was off to its best MEAC start since the 1999-2000 season, was routed, 74-37, by host Hampton (5-9, 1-2 MEAC). The Lady Pirates, who led 46-14 at halftime, forced the Bears into a season-high 27 turnovers. Hampton held Corin Adams, the preseason MEAC Player of the Year, to nine points; last season, she scored a career-high 32 in an overtime win at HU Convocation Center. Kristina Rosario led Morgan with 14 rebounds.
AP women's poll: Off to its best start in 30 years, Georgetown is back in the Associated Press Top 25. The Hoyas are ranked 24th, their second trip to the Top 25; the other time was No. 25 ranking for one week in 1993. Georgetown (13-2), led by freshman Sugar Rodgers, who is second in the Big East in scoring at 18.5 points, has won 12 straight games since losing to Dayton on Nov. 20.
Women's honors: Rider freshman center Caitlin Bopp (Institute of Notre Dame) was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week after scoring a career-high 19 points and adding 11 rebounds at Loyola on Friday. ... Coppin State's Spotwood was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week after scoring a career-high 18 points and grabbbing a career-best eight rebounds to lead Coppin State to its first MEAC win of the season. ... Senior Ali Moreland (South River) was named Centennial Conference Player of the Week after averaging 16.0 points and adding 12 steals and nine assists.
Men's honors: Morgan State sophomore Kevin Thompson (Walbrook), who is third in the nation in rebounding this season with 12.5 a game, was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Thompson, the 2008-09 MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, has been named Defensive Player of the Week four times this season. James Cotton of UMES was named Rookie of the Week.
