A match that featured three ties came down to the heavyweight bout as Marcus Maddox pinned Malik Johnson in 5:58 and No. 6 Archbishop Curley's wrestling team upset host No. 2 Archbishop Spalding, 36-30, Wednesday.
The Cavaliers (2-1) led 9-0 after Brian Cavey (119) defeated Matt Ches, 9-4. The Friars (3-0) won the next two rounds and tied the score with Brett Przywara's (130) 6-0 decision over Brady Gaynor.
Spalding would pull away from Curley, only to have them catch up later with Anthony Williams' (171) 10-3 decision for a 24-24 score and Leo Johnson (215) forefit for a 30-30 deadlock to set up the game-winning final.
No. 12 North County def. Chesapeake-AA, Severna Park: The host Knights (11-2) went 2-0 beating the Cougars, 52-20, and the Falcons, 44-18.
Pat Carey (189) pinned both Brody Robinette of Chesapeake in 46 seconds and Joey Anderson of Severna Park in 4:14 and recorded his 100th varsity win. Carey has a total 14 pins on the season.
"Pat has been a fantastic leader and a hard worker for our program," said North County head coach Don Foderaro. "He is definitely at the heart of North County wrestling."
Girls basketballNo. 6 Seton Keough 54, Mercy 44: Achiri Ade had 15 points and Liz Brown had a double double (10 points and 10 rebounds) to power the host Gators (7-4).
The game went back and forth with multiple lead changes in the first half. Seton Keough took a two-point lead at the half before stretching it to eight in the third quarter.
Ava Trageser had a game-high 19 points for the Magic.
No. 7 River Hill 57, Glenelg 49: Shantrell Oliver had a game-high 22 points and Alex Vegan had 16 to power the host Hawks (7-1) past the Gladiators. River Hill led 17-9 after the first quarter and stayed infront.
No. 11 Catonsville 68, Towson 32: Candace McCray scored 17 points to power the visiting Comets (10-1) past the Generals. Catonsville led 17-11 after the first quarter before outscoring Towson, 19-5 in the second and 17-2 in the third quarter.
No. 15 Howard 60, Reservoir 38: Brittany Butler scored a game-high 19 points to power the host Lions (7-2) past the Gators. Howard built a 28-9 lead at halftime and never trailed.
