James Anderson scored 26 points, Keiton Page added 20 points and host Oklahoma State relied on its outside shooting to beat Coppin State, 79-61, on Tuesday night without suspended forward Marshall Moses. Moses watched the game from the Cowboys' bench in a gray sweater after being charged earlier in the day with possession of marijuana and driving with a suspended license. Moses, who was averaging a double double, was arrested early Monday morning, and coach Travis Ford decided to make him sit out one game. Without his presence inside, Oklahoma State (12-2) attempted a season-high 34 3-pointers and matched its season best by making 10. Michael Harper led Coppin State (5-7) with 21 points, and reserve Sam Coleman scored 13. The Eagles have lost their first four games on an eight-game trip.
More men's basketball: UMBC senior forward Justin Fry and freshman wing Jamar Wertz will miss the rest of the season and are expected to resume their athletic careers during the next academic year. Neither player competed in any games this season. Fry, who averaged 8.1 points and 4.7 rebounds last season, underwent successful surgery to repair the medial patellofemoral ligament in his right knee to prevent the reoccurrence of dislocation. He suffered the injury in a workout in September. Wertz had arthroscopic knee surgery in November and has not returned to full team practice. ... Navy sophomore guard Jordan Sugars picked up his second Patriot League Player of the Week accolade of the season after averaging 23 points and 8.5 rebounds in two home victories.
Women's basketball: Despite a game-high 20 points by Miriam McKenzie, visiting Loyola (6-7, 1-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) dropped a 60-57 decision to Fairfield. ... Navy (8-7) got 15 points and seven rebounds from K.C. Gordon but lost, 84-54, to host Dayton (12-3).
Men's soccer: Loyola's Tennant McVea has been selected to compete at the Major League Soccer player combine Friday through Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. A native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, McVea is the second Greyhounds player in as many years to compete at the event, following goalkeeper Milos Kocic last season. Kocic was a second-round draft pick of D.C. United, played in several games as a rookie and recently signed a contract extension with the team. The draft will be Thursday.
Men's lacrosse: Matt Wilson, a two-time first-team All-American at Washington College who graduated in 1989, will be inducted into the US Lacrosse Greater Baltimore Chapter Hall of Fame on Jan. 23. Wilson, a defenseman, played in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League for six years, including two in Baltimore.
Swimming: Maryland sophomore Ginny Glover (Wilde Lake) was selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference women's Performer of the Week for the second time this season. She won two individual events and helped two relay teams to first- and second-place showings in Maryland's 191-103 dual-meet victory against Miami, improving the Terrapins' record to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
