No. 6 W.Va. defeats Coppin State, 69-43

Kevin Jones led the host Mountaineers in scoring for the second straight game Saturday, setting career highs of 22 points and 11 rebounds in No. 6 West Virginia's 69-43 win over Coppin State.

West Virginia (7-0) overcame the absence of two starters to hold a second straight opponent to fewer than 50 points. Despite a poor shooting night, West Virginia's lead never fell below double digits after halftime, and the Mountaineers won their 28th straight home game against a nonconference foe.

West Virginia shot 40 percent (23 of 58) from the field, and made four of 26 3-point tries and 19 of 34 free throws, stoking coach Bob Huggins' season-long frustrations about his inconsistent offense. The Mountaineers have been held to fewer than 70 points three times, and Saturday's performance followed a 36 percent shooting effort against Duquesne.

Vince Goldsberry scored 12 points and Lenny Young added 11 for Coppin State (5-4), which fell to 0-22 against Big East teams. The Eagles committed 20 turnovers.

George Washington 73, Towson 69: Tony Taylor's 18-foot jumper from the top of the key with 27 seconds left broke a tie, and the Colonials (8-2) beat the host Tigers (2-5).

George Washington is off to its best start in four years.

Taylor's jumper gave the Colonials a 71-69 lead after the Tigers had climbed out of a 12-point deficit.

With 9:24 left, Tim Johnson scored on a fast-break dunk to give the Colonials a 61-49 lead. Over the next eight minutes, the Tigers chipped away at the deficit. With 1:02 left, senior guard Josh Thornton hit an off-balance 3-pointer from the left side to tie the score at 69. It was the first time the score had been tied since it was 8-8 in the first half.

Taylor, who scored nine points in the game, dribbled around for 15 seconds looking for an open teammate. With the shot clock winding down, he squared up and made the 18-footer to give the Colonials the lead.

Electing to go for the win, the Tigers went back to Thornton. With nine seconds left, his off-balance 3-point try in traffic fell short, and Colonials guard Aaron Ware made a breakaway layup with one second left for the final score.

Damian Hollis, a 6-foot-8 forward, led George Washington with 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Hollis made all four of his field-goal attempts as the Colonials shot 50 percent from the field. Johnson added 12 points as 11 different players scored for GW.

David Brewster led the Tigers with 16 points - equaling his career high - while Thornton added 14. Sophomore guard RaShawn Polk gave the Tigers a lift off the bench, scoring 13 points on 4-for-6 shooting from 3-point range.

Rider 79, UMBC 67: Ryan Thompson scored 21 points as the visiting Broncs (7-4) beat the Retrievers (0-9).

Rider trailed 12-10 with 13:53 left in the first half before scoring 14 straight points to take a 24-12 advantage on Jermaine Jackson's jump shot with 9:48 left until halftime.

UMBC's Matt Spadafora scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Wofford 73, Navy 62: The host Terriers (5-6) outscored the Midshipmen 23-12 over the final eight minutes for the win.

The loss was Navy's third in a row and drops the Mids to 4-7 overall. .

"I thought we played very hard tonight and really left it all on the floor," Navy head coach Billy Lange said.

After trailing for most of the contest, Navy tied the score at 50 with 8:22 to play on Jordan Sugars' 3-pointer, his fifth of the contest. However, Wofford then went on a 14-4 run over the next four-plus minutes to take a 64-54 advantage with 3:50 remaining. Navy would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
