"In a showdown of undefeated teams, the Lancers won their fifth state championship with a 31-14 victory over Huntingtown to cap a 14-0 season Saturday night at M&T; Bank Stadium."
Only two teams finished as undefeated state champions, both from Frederick County - Linganore and Class 1A winner Catoctin.
In bouncing back from last season's loss in the state 4A final, the Lancers' Kevin Myers and Zach Zwinak scored two touchdowns each. On the defensive end, Linganore held the state's leading rusher Greg Goodwin, who gained more than 2,500 yards this season, to 43 yards. Goodwin scored two late touchdowns to bring his season total to 37.
An 8-yard touchdown run from Zwinak, the Maryland Gatorade Player of the Year who is headed to Penn State, gave the Lancers a 24-0 lead with 10:48 left in the game. Myers scored both his touchdowns in the first half, and Alex Eckard kicked a 30-yard field goal.
Goodwin finally got the Hurricanes (13-1) on the board with 9:25 left, but Huntingtown, a first-time finalist after edging River Hill, 10-7, in the semifinal, had no answer for the Lancers' twin running threat. Myers gained 126 yards on 18 carries while Zwinak gained 104 yards on 22 carries. Quarterback Nick Marth was 8-for-10 for 84 yards and one touchdown toss to Myers.
Huntingtown quarterback Justin Bittner was 15-for-24 for 200 yards.
