Maryland falls to Virginia in NCAA quarterfinals, 3-0

Baltimore Sun

Maryland's run to the College Cup fell one game short Friday as No. 2 seed Virginia topped the Terps, 3-0, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA men's soccer championship at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. The Cavaliers' first goal came in the fifth minute when Neil Barlow's cross from the near sideline misdirected off the Terrapins' back line and into the back of the net. After the goal, Maryland regrouped quickly and had a pair of shots at about the 10-minute mark. Casey Townsend's shot was blocked by Cavaliers goalie Diego Restrepo, and then, after an interception in the midfield by Matt Kassel, the sophomore saw a second shot miss just wide after a solid cross by fellow forward Jason Herrick. Virginia scored again at 58:28 and then at 77:59.
