Stevens out, Laviolette in for Flyers

Baltimore Sun

The Philadelphia Flyers fired coach John Stevens and replaced him with Peter Laviolette on Friday after the team was shut out in consecutive games.

Laviolette led the Carolina Hurricanes to their only Stanley Cup title in 2006. He was fired in December 2008 and was still under contract.

The Flyers were expected to contend in the Eastern Conference this season after adding goalie Ray Emery and defenseman Chris Pronger. They were 13-11-1 and out of the playoff picture entering Saturday's game against the Capitals, with just one win in their last seven games.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren made the call to fire Stevens.

"Peter Laviolette brings experience along with a different approach to the game," Holmgren said.

Laviolette was 167-130-30 in his four-plus seasons with the Hurricanes.

•Ducks winger Teemu Selanne had surgery to repair a broken bone in his left hand and is expected to miss four to six weeks. ... The 2010 NHL draft will be held in Los Angeles on June 25-26, marking the first time in its 46-year history that the event will be held in California.
