The New Jersey Nets were pounded into NBA infamy Wednesday night, falling 117-101 to the Mavericks for their 18th straight loss to start the season.
The Mavs made 17 of 19 shots and opened a 27-point lead in a nearly flawless second quarter, burying the Nets early.
The Nets passed the 1988-89 Heat and 1999 Clippers, who both dropped their first 17 games. New Jersey's next chance to end the streak comes Friday at home against the Bobcats.
• Allen Iverson signed a one-year, non-guaranteed contract with the 76ers three years after their acrimonious split led to his trade. The 10-time All-Star and 2001 MVP is expected to make his debut Monday at home against the Nuggets. The Sixers would owe just under $650,000 if they guarantee his contract for the rest of the season on Jan. 10.
•Jazz coach Jerry Sloan, 67, has signed a deal to return next year for his 23rd season in Utah. The Hall of Famer is the longest-tenured active coach in major professional sports.
