The senior standout was overpowering in reaching the boys singles state championship match this weekend at University of Maryland. And when Cauneac did come across adversity — when he dropped the opening set against Poolesville sophomore Dennis Wang for the title — he responded like a champion. Leaning on his big serve and strong forehand, Cauneac recovered to claim his first state title with a 2-6, 6-1,6-4 win over Wang in Saturday's final. It completes an undefeated season for Cauneac, who surrendered only four games in the previous three rounds of the two-day tournament. In Saturday's semifinal round, he claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win over Atholton's Matt Sklar. He becomes the first Severna Park player to win an individual boys title since 1982. A four-year varsity player, Cauneac, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology commit, won his third straight singles title in the Anne Arundel County championships to lead the Falcons to a third straight team title.
