Boy Athlete of the Week (April 7): Garrett Southern, Glenelg, baseball

The senior catcher batted .750 with five RBIs to lead the Gladiators to three wins last week, including the championship of the Howard Invitational Tournament. In the tournament title game, a 10-7 win over the host Lions, Southern went 4 for 4 with three singles, a double and two RBIs. He also made a diving catch on a popup, turning it into a double play. In the tournament semifinal, he went 1 for 3 with a sacrifice fly and an RBI in a 9-5 win over Northeast. Earlier in the week, he went 1 fo 1 with a sacrifice fly and two RBIs and threw out a base runner in a 12-0 win over Long Reach. For the season, he is batting .765 with a .941 slugging percentage and eight RBIs. Southern, who plays for the Oriolelanders club team, has a 3.45 GPA and plans to play at York or Ohio Wesleyan next year.
