NCAA Division I tournament semifinal preview: Yale vs. Albany

NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse tournament semifinals

(At Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Mass.)

No. 3 seed Yale (15-3) vs. No. 2 seed Albany (16-2)

When: Saturday, noon

Coaches: Andy Shay, Yale; Scott Marr, Albany

Players to watch: Ben Reeves, senior, attackman, Yale; Connor Fields, senior, attackman, Albany

Outlook: The two sides have split 14 all-time meetings with the Bulldogs ending a three-game skid by walloping the Great Danes, 14-6, on April 22. But Albany lost senior attackman Connor Fields (31 goals, 50 assists) in the first quarter of that game after aggravating a right knee injury suffered earlier in the season, and he is complemented by freshman attackman Tehoka Nanticoke (49 goals, 32 assists). Meanwhile, Yale is paced offensively by senior attackman and Tewaaraton Award finalist Ben Reeves (56 goals, 46 assists). A week after outdueling Denver senior Trevor Baptiste, Great Danes freshman faceoff specialist TD Ierlan (81.0 percent on 341-for-421, 246 ground balls, five goals, four assists) gets a rematch with Bulldogs senior Conor Mackie (64.6 percent on 261-for-404, 176 ground balls, three goals). Jitters could be a factor for a pair of programs trying to advance to the first title game in their respective histories.
