The McDonogh boys basketball team relied on its perimeter shooting Friday, making nine 3-pointers to upset No. 10 Poly, 61-57, at the Oakland Mills Holiday Tournament.
The victory is the Eagles' second win over a ranked opponent this week; they beat top-ranked and previously unbeaten John Carroll, 58-55, on Tuesday.
McDonogh (9-3) led by six points with 3:20 left in the game and held on to beat the Engineers (5-3). Evan Fisher (19 points) and Noah Locke (15 points) each had three 3-pointers for the Eagles, who will face No. 12 host Oakland Mills in tonight's championship at 7.
Hereford 56, Manchester Valley 53, OT: Trailing by four points with 35 seconds left, Gabe Ceribelli hit two 3-pointers to lift the Bulls (7-2) over the Mavericks (4-2) at the North Carroll Christmas Tournament.
Ceribelli finished with a game-high 25 points. Hereford's Chase Wagner made a 15-foot jumper with 18 seconds left in regulation to knot the score at 49 and force overtime. The Bulls face Perry Hall in tonight's championship at 6.
Atholton 55, Broadneck 53: Brandon Willis scored a game-high 16 points and the Raiders (5-3) held off a late rally by the Scorpions (6-2) at the Glen Burnie Holiday Tournament.
Atholton built a 13-point lead in the third quarter, but a combination of turnovers by the Raiders and 3-pointers by Broadneck closed the deficit. Atholton will face host Glen Burnie in the championship at 7 tonight.
Glen Burnie 57, North County 51: The host Gophers (3-5), losers of three straight — including two in overtime — found themselves in another tight game, but they scored the final eight points and pulled out a victory over the Knights (1-6) in the semifinals of the 13th annual James T. Bogle Invitational.
Drew Santos' two free throws with 33 seconds left in the game put Glen Burnie up for good in a game in which the Gophers didn't have their first lead until the opening minute of the fourth quarter.
