Mission accomplished: UMBC makes it into NCAA tournament's 'One Shining Moment' montage

During Monday’s lunch hour, Little Caesars was fulfilling its promise to give away pizza to everybody if a 16th seed beat a No. 1 seed during the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. The Retrievers became the first team to do that in 136 tries when they shocked and awed Virginia, 74-54, on March 16.

Historically, the NCAA men’s basketball tournament’s glorious annual “One Shining Moment” montage has not been hospitable to No. 16 seeds. But only because for as long as the venerable March Madness retrospective had been around, No. 1 seeds had not been hospitable to No. 16 seeds.

After UMBC stunned top overall seed Virginia in the first round last month, Retrievers forward Joe Sherburne was asked whether the team realized it had made history.

“I think we kind of all wanted to be in the ‘One Shining Moment’ video,” he said. “We were all in the locker room singing the first line because that's all we know, but I think we're going to have to learn the rest of the song, too.”

And wouldn’t you know it: Sherburne’s “One Shining Moment” quote made the “One Shining Moment” video. Very meta.

Also appearing in the video: UMBC’s True Grit mascot pumping his fist, Max Curran’s back, coach Ryan Odom celebrating, UMBC’s locker room celebrating, K.J. Maura celebrating, Jourdan Grant celebrating, Daniel Akin winning an opening tip, Jairus Lyles shooting, the UMBC bench celebrating, Lyles celebrating and Virginia definitely not celebrating as Jim Nantz proclaims the moment the “shocker of all shockers.”

As for whether the team learned the lyrics? You be the judge.
