COLLEGE PARK — Maryland announced its three-member men's basketball recruiting class Wednesday, and coach Mark Turgeon said he still hopes to add a player or two during the late signing period.
The Terps' class — which includes 6-foot-9 center Shaquille Cleare from Houston, 6-2 guard Seth Allen from Fredericksburg, Va., and 6-8 forward Jake Layman from Wrentham, Mass. — is ranked 17th in ESPN.com's national team rankings.
"I expected to have one more signed. I thought we had one more in our back pocket, and it didn't get done," Turgeon said Wednesday, the first day of the week-long early signing period. "We're still actively trying to get some things done."
The Terps would like to add a power forward and a guard, but Turgeon said he was "thrilled to death" with the current group.
All three recruits were courted by Turgeon while he was at Texas A&M.
During a conference call, Turgeon called Cleare "a national recruit."
"[He] can match up with a lot of people," the first-year Terps coach said. "It's hard to get the big guys."
Turgeon called Allen "a very explosive athlete and scorer. He has a great feel for the game, is very good in the pick-and-roll and will be a great defender for us."
On Layman, Turgeon said: "The first time I saw Jake, I liked his length and his skill set. Jakes gives you great versatility."
