Junior Tierney Pfirman had 16 points and 11 rebounds off the bench as the No. 10 Maryland women's basketball team defeated visiting Mount St. Mary's, 109-45, Friday in the season opener for both teams.
"My main goal was to go out and have fun," Pfirman said. "When I have fun everything else reveals itself, team work, everything. Going out there and getting my first offensive rebound, that was a pretty big motivator, so I just figured since I got the first one, then why not get 10 more."
Seven Terps scored in double digits, including freshman reserve Kiara Leslie with 16, in their first game in the post-Alyssa Thomas era.
Maryland started the game on a 9-0 run, led by five points from sophomore Lexie Brown who finished with 12, and the Terps led 57-25 at halftime.
Jacqueline Brewer led the Mount with 12 points.
William & Mary 72, Loyola Maryland 71: The visiting Greyhounds were ahead by one entering the final minute but were unable to hold on as a late layup by the Tribe won the game.
UMBC 93, Eastern 68: Capree Garner scored 16 points, leading five players in double digits, as the host Retrievers recorded their highest point total since November 2009.
North Carolina A&T 52, Navy 47: The Aggies overcame a six-point halftime deficit and held the visiting Mids scoreless for nearly eight minutes in the second half.
Penn State 71, Towson 64: Despite a career-high 32-point performance by Dominique Johnson, the Tigers lost to the host Nittany Lions in the preseason WNIT's first round.
Georgia 68, Morgan State 36: Led by Tiaria Griffin's 20-point outing, the host Lady Bulldogs rolled.
