Terps take lessons from ugly offense vs. Michigan State into game vs. Minnesota

COLLEGE PARK — Melo Trimble couldn't remember the last time he shot so poorly in a game, certainly not one in which the team he was playing for won.

The Maryland freshman point guard was in complete sync — something the 12th-ranked Terps were clearly not on offense in Tuesday's double-overtime, 68-66 win at Michigan State — with coach Mark Turgeon.

Right after the game in East Lansing, Mich., Turgeon said he had trouble figuring out how his now 13-1 team survived its Big Ten debut despite shooting a dismal 19 of 57 from the field, starting 1 of 18 from 3-point range and committing 21 turnovers.

By Friday, after practicing for Saturday's Big Ten home opener against Minnesota (11-3, 0-1), Turgeon had more clarity on what was one of the more satisfying — and bizarre — victories since he came to Maryland in 2011.

"We did defend and rebound better than we did all year, and really that was the difference," Turgeon said.

It was a good sign for a team that won its only previous road game (a 73-64 win at Oklahoma State on Dec. 21) and upset No. 9 Iowa State (72-63 in Kansas City on Nov. 25) as much with its offensive efficiency as its defense and rebounding.

"It is encouraging, and hopefully we'll be better offensively as the season goes on," Turgeon said. "I think Michigan State did some things that we hadn't quite adjusted to. And maybe it was just being the first Big Ten game on the road and Michigan State had us playing a little bit slower."

In Turgeon's 71 wins at Maryland, the Terps shot worse from the field during a victory only once, going 17 of 53 against South Carolina State in 2012-13.

Their 4-for-22 from 3-point range was certainly better than when Maryland missed all nine of its attempts in a win over North Carolina-Wilmington in Turgeon's debut with the Terps in 2011-12 and reminiscent of the win this season over USC-Upstate, when Maryland was 2-for-17 in the first half and 6-for-25 overall.
