Oct. 26, 1983: The world champion Orioles place three players on the Associated Press major league All-Star team: shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. (.318, 27 home runs, 102 RBIs), first baseman Eddie Murray (.306, 33 homers, 111 RBIs) and pitcher Scott McGregor (18-7, 3.18 ERA).
Oct. 25, 1964: A 34-0 victory over the Lions in Detroit is the Colts' sixth straight win, tying a club record. Johnny Unitas throws touchdown passes to Raymond Berry and Jimmy Orr, and Jerry Logan returns an interception for a score.
Oct. 26, 1948: Mildred Burke, the world women's wrestling champion since 1936, defends her title with a 22-minute victory over previously undefeated Ada Ash at the Coliseum.
Oct. 25, 1930: Ed Duffy, a tackle for Loyola College, suffers a broken back on the opening kickoff in a 40-7 loss to Western Maryland (now McDaniel). Duffy conceals the injury until after the game, when he is admitted to Mercy Hospital with a fractured vertebra.
Oct. 29, 1927: Before an announced 70,000 fans at Philadelphia's Franklin Field, Navy defeats Penn, 12-6, in football. Joe Bauer scores the winning touchdown for the Midshipmen, making a spectacular fingertip catch of a pass from Art Spring and racing 76 yards late in the game.
Oct. 23, 1902: On opening day of the fall meet at Pimlico, two jockeys are thrown from their mounts and hospitalized. A third rider falls but catches his foot in the stirrup and is dragged 40 yards.
Oct. 28, 1898: Western Maryland's football team defeats Baltimore Medical College, 12-6, on the Maryland Oval. In the second half, upset with the officiating, BMC requests — and gets — a change in referees, after which it scores a touchdown.
