July 7, 1996: Boston's Mo Vaughn hits a three-run, game-winning home run off Orioles closer Randy Myers in the ninth inning before an announced 47,532 at Camden Yards. The 7-5 loss to the Red Sox ends an impressive streak for the playoff-bound Birds, who'd been 37-0 when leading after eight innings.
July 13, 1993: The first All-Star Game played at Camden Yards ends with a cascade of boos from Orioles fans upset with the nonappearance of Mike Mussina, the team's star pitcher. Mussina spends the ninth inning warming in the bullpen as the American League rolls to a 9-3 victory.
July 10, 1982: Maryland announces that it will move football and basketball-playing student-athletes out of Ellicott Hall and spread them out in any number of dorms on campus. "The more they can interact with other students, the more well-rounded they'll be," athletic director Dick Dull says.
July 8, 1973: Polly Winde, an 8-year-old swimmer from Ellicott City, wins four events in the Wilmington (Del.) Firecracker Mini Meet. Winde goes on to star nationally, earn All-America honors at North Carolina and wed B.J. Surhoff, who later played for the Orioles.
July 13, 1968: "Yeah, I expected him to be that tough," Towson's Mac Pardew, 22, says after defeating his father, 49-year-old Mickey Pardew, 6-2, 6-8, 7-5, to win his second straight Evening Sun Municipal Tennis Tournament at Clifton Park.
July 9, 1959: Milt Pappas and Jerry Walker, both 20-year-old right-handers, pitch shutouts as the Orioles sweep a doubleheader from the Washington Senators, 8-0 and 5-0. Gus Triandos homers in the opener and goes 4-for-4 in the nightcap for the Birds, who climb to within three games of the AL lead.
July 8, 1919: The first-place Orioles are upstaged by a hometown boy. Baltimore-born Eddie Rommel pitches the Newark Bears to an 11-5 victory over the Birds in an International League game. Rommel goes on to win 171 games in the majors and become a respected AL umpire.
