July 29, 1997: The Orioles obtain designated hitter Harold Baines, who attended St. Michaels, in a deal with the Chicago White Sox. Three years later, to the day, the Orioles trade him back again.
Aug. 2, 1987: Texas pitcher Bobby Witt strikes out four Orioles in one inning, tying a major league record, in the Rangers' 5-2 victory in Arlington. In the second inning, Witt fans Ray Knight, Terry Kennedy, Mike Young and Ken Gerhart. A dropped third strike allows Kennedy to reach first base.
Aug. 3, 1960: At the Colts' training camp in Westminster, Art Donovan, the team's rotund defensive tackle, runs a 30-yard footrace against Bob Chambers, a 297-pound rookie from Norfolk, Va. Donovan wins by 3 yards. Chambers is released the same day.
Aug. 3, 1959: The Orioles' Jerry Walker, 20, starts the All-Star Game in Los Angeles and gets the win as the American League triumphs, 5-3. Walker, a right-hander, pitches three innings, allowing two hits and one run.
July 29, 1956: Golfer Arnold Palmer, 26, wins the seventh Eastern Open at Mount Pleasant by two strokes with a score of 277. Palmer, who won the U.S. Amateur in 1954, led for the last three rounds here.
July 30, 1924: It's a whirlwind day for Orioles pitcher Bill Henderson, who is married this morning at St. Ann's Catholic Church, and then starts the first game of a doubleheader against the Newark Bears at Oriole Park. Chased in the first inning, he starts the second game as well, hits a home run and goes the distance in an 8-3 Orioles victory
Aug. 2, 1901: The Orioles proclaim their first "Ladies Day" a success and decide to hold it weekly after a 5-4 American League victory over the Washington Senators. "The girls root for the home club," The Sun reports, "and are never known to agree with the umpire when he decides against it."
