Aug. 14, 1991: Orioles rookie Mike Mussina (1-2) wins his first game and strikes out 10 in a 10-2 victory over the Texas Rangers at Memorial Stadium. "It's nice," the 22-year-old right-hander says, "but I wish it [had] been the first game instead of the third one."
Aug. 13, 1945: More than 25,000 fans attend a boxing benefit for the Baltimore police widows' pension fund at Municipal Stadium — to see not the fighters, but the referee, Sgt. Joe Louis, world heavyweight champion.
Aug. 17, 1927: A car given by Babe Ruth to the St. Mary's Industrial School is destroyed when hit by a train after it stalls on the railroad tracks. The driver, Brother Matthias Boutilier, who was Ruth's mentor at the school, escapes injury.
Aug. 16, 1919: For the second time this year, Orioles right-hander Rube Parnham goes the distance in both games of a doubleheader as the Birds sweep the Rochester Colts, 6-1 and 8-4. Parnham will win 28 games as Baltimore captures its first International League championship.
