Aug. 29, 1966: Detroit Tigers right-hander Denny McLain throws 229 pitches in a route-going 6-3 victory over the first-place Orioles at Memorial Stadium. McLain allows eight hits and walks nine in winning his 16th game against 11 losses.
Aug. 27, 1961: The Orioles' Milt Pappas pitches a two-hitter and hits two home runs in defeating the Minnesota Twins, 3-0, at Metropolitan Stadium. It's the 18th shutout of the season for the third-place Birds and the 11th in the 22-year-old Pappas' career.
Aug. 31, 1957: As the home crowd cheers him on, Orioles slugger Gus Triandos hits an inside-the-park home run in a 4-1 victory over Boston. Triandos' line drive "bounced crazily along the fence like a pool ball," The Sun says, eluding Red Sox left fielder Ted Williams long enough for the burly catcher to score standing up.
Aug. 30, 1932: To the surprise of the 1,000 spectators at Carlin's Park, referee Ed Brockman's trousers rip down the middle as he works a wrestling match between Ray Steele and George Zaharias, husband of golf champion Babe Didrikson. Brockman continues gamely while donning a pair of lavender trunks that someone throws into the ring.
