Navy can't hold on against Monmouth, loses 3rd in row

Host Navy built a halftime lead that it failed to protect as Monmouth took the lead with less than two minutes to go and won, 69-67, on Tuesday night.

The Midshipmen (3-7) lost their third straight game.

Isaiah Roberts went 2-for-2 from the foul line for a 62-60 Navy lead with 5:08 to play. Andrew Nicolas broke a scoreless drought of 2:22 with a jumper to tie the score.

The Hawks (1-8) took the lead for good, 64-62, on a layup by Ed Waite with 1:50 left. Navy came within one on a 3-pointer by Jordan Sugars with seven seconds left, but Dion Nesmith made a free throw with six seconds remaining.

Bowie State 84, California (Pa.) 75: Darren Clarke scored a game-high 28 points and the host Bulldogs (4-1) used a 46-point second half to pull away from the Vulcans (5-2).

Bowie State led for most of the game, but California rallied to start the second half and led 44-40. The Bulldogs regained the lead for good at 51-49 on a layup by Jay Gavin with 15:21 left in the game.

Marymount 64, Salisbury 57: The host Saints (3-5, 1-2 Capital Athletic Conference) outscored the Sea Gulls (5-3, 0-2) by 10 in the second half to win. Devin Posey and Mike Atkins each scored 11 points for Salisbury.

UMBC 65, UMES 60: Erin Brown scored a game-high 24 points, and the host Retrievers (4-4) rallied during the second half to win.

The Hawks (2-4) shot 44.4 percent from the field and took a 31-28 lead at the break.

UMBC then scored the first five points of the second half, and the lead changed seven times with five ties in the first 12:33 of the period.

The Retrievers took control with a 12-3 run that included 10 points by Brown, giving them a game-high nine-point lead at 61-52 with 3:20 left

Salisbury 65, Marymount 45: The visiting Sea Gulls (4-3, 2-0 CAC) used a 17-4 run over the final 9:28 of the first half to spark the win over the Saints (3-5, 1-2).

Freshman Anna Hackett scored a game-high 18 points on 8-for-8 shooting and added seven rebounds and seven assists to lead Salisbury to its second straight victory.

The Sea Gulls shot a season-best 52 percent from the field (26-for-50) in the win.

Hackett hit a jumper with 10:32 remaining in the first half, for a 9-0 Sea Gulls run that Lexi Kebetz punctuated with the final five points, to give Salisbury a 24-15 edge with 4:48 left.
