State: VCU trounces Towson men a 2nd time, 66-43

Bradford Burgess scored 22 points and the host Virginia Commonwealth men's basketball team took advantage of every Towson turnover Wednesday night, beating the Tigers, 66-43.

The Rams (21-5, 12-2 Colonial Athletic Association) have won 10 in a row and 18 of their past 20. The Tigers (1-25, 1-13) committed 28 turnovers.

Burgess had been quiet in the previous four games, scoring eight, eight, nine and six points. He was 8-for-15 from the field, including 6-for-11 from behind the arc.

D.J. Haley added career highs in points (10) and rebounds (11). Robert Nwankwo had 19 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers, who lost, 67-42, to VCU on Jan. 25.

The Rams harassed Towson point guard Kris Walden constantly with traps. The Tigers had 13 turnovers against VCU's pressure but stayed afloat by feeding the ball to Nwankwo and collecting seven offensive rebounds.

Nwankwo had half of Towson's first-half points and six rebounds.

Walden finished with two points, six assists and five turnovers.

Holy Cross 64, Navy 52: Justin Burrell scored 17 points and Phil Beans scored eight of his 10 points in the second half as the visiting Crusaders (10-13, 4-5 Patriot League) handed the Midshipmen (3-20, 0-9) their 16th straight loss.

The only teams with longer active slides in Division I are Binghamton (24 games) and UC Davis (18).

Jordan Sugars led the Midshipmen with 20 points, but no other Navy player had more than seven. J.J. Avila, the Mids' leading scorer and rebounder who was suspended indefinitely last week for a violation of Naval Academy rules, did not play.

Wagner 59, Mount St. Mary's 44: Julian Norfleet led the host Mount (6-18, 4-9 Northeast Conference) with 18 points and seven rebounds.

Trailing 30-19 at the half, the Mount cut the deficit to 36-29 on two a pair of free throws by Norfleet. free throws. The Seahawks (20-4, 11-2) scored the next five points, but Norfleet made nailed a three 3-pointer to cut the gap to 41-32 with 9:33 left in the game.

The Mount then had three chances to cut into the deficit, but missed 3-pointers each time. Wagner then went on an 11-0 run to take a 52-32 lead and seal the victory.

Johns Hopkins 52, McDaniel 48: Freshman George Bugarinovic scored a game-high 18 points to pace the host Blue Jays (13-9, 9-6 Centennial Conference) past the Green Terror (7-15, 4-11).

St. Mary's 59, Salisbury 42: Devin Spencer (Towson Catholic) and Brendan McFall each scored 16 points to lead the host Seahawks (16-6, 10-3 CAC) past the Sea Gulls (12-9, 5-7). Chris Viqueira had 12 points for Salisbury.

Stevenson 75, York 70: Brett Burrier had a game-high 24 points to power the host Mustangs (6-17, 3-11 CAC) past the Spartans (13-9, 8-5).

Mary Washington 77, Hood 46: Cameron Cook had 12 points in a losing effort for the host Blazers (13-10, 5-9 CAC).

The Eagles (16-6, 11-2) outscored Hood 46-23 in the second half.

Swarthmore 84, Washington College 78: Kevin Breslin scored a game-high 31 points in a losing effort for the host Shoremen (13-9, 9-6 Centennial). The Garnet (2-20, 2-13) used an 11-0 run to take control in the first half.

Women

Navy 73, Holy Cross 56: Audrey Bauer scored 16 points to led four Mids (13-10, 6-3 Patriot) in double figures. The Crusaders fell to 13-11, 4-5.

UMBC 63, Stony Broook 51: Erin Brown scored a game-high 21 points, and the visiting Retrievers (13-12, 7-5 America East) got off to a fast start.

McDaniel 76, Johns Hopkins 74: Hopkins' Katie Brooks sank a 3-pointer for the seventh tie of the game, 74-74, with 10 seconds left. But McDaniel's Emma Wingerd (15 points) rebounded a missed 3-pointer by Rachael Rybak (Franklin) and got the winning layup with one second left.

The Green Terror (10-13, 7-10 Centennial) led by as many as 10 points in the first half.

Salisbury 60, St. Mary's 52: Freshman Anna Hacket had her first doubledouble (14 points, 10 rebounds), and the visiting Sea Gulls (12-9, 9-4 CAC) secured a home game in the conference playoffs for the first time since the 2002-03 season.

Katie McGahagan scored a game-high 18 points as Salisbury opened with a 7-0 run. Raven Owens led the Seahawks (8-15, 6-8) with 16 points.

Washington College 67, Swarthmore 44: Sally O'Donnell scored her 1,000th career point when she made two free throws with 17:40 left in the first half.

O'Donnell finished with a game-high 17 points for Washington (13-9, 8-9 Centennial). The Garnet fell to 8-13, 6-11.

The Shorewomen opened the second half with a 14-4 run.

York 73, Stevenson 39: The host Mustangs (9-12, 5-8 CAC) were held to 15 points in the first half as their three-game winning streak came to an end.

The Spartans (18-3, 11-1) were led by April Sparkman with 20 points.

Mary Washington 53, Hood 47: Emily Maerz scored a game-high 20 points, but the host Blazers (6-16, 2-12 CAC) fell to the Eagles (22-0, 13-0).

Mary Washington held Hood to 18 points in the first half and scored 27 and 26 in the first and second halves.

Keystone 80, Notre Dame (Md.) 40: The Gators (0-20, 0-14 Colonial States Athletic Association), led by Imani Stokes with 17 points, are still seeking their first win.

Alyssa Cuomo had 16 points for the Giants.
