The host UMBC men's basketball team hoped to end a four-game losing streak Tuesday night. But despite a game-high 28 points for Chase Plummer, the Retrievers fell to Hartford, 76-70.
The Hawks (5-19, 5-7 America East) ended a five-game losing streak.
Nate Sikma had 20 points for Hartford, which led 44-41 at the half. The Hawks outrebounded the Retrievers 32-23 and had three times as many second-chance points, 9-3.
Other top scorers for UMBC (3-20, 2-9) included Brian Neller with 14 points and Joey Getz with 11. Hartford's Andrew Torres added 12 points and Wes Cole had 11.
Bowie State 91, Chowan 68: Travis Hyman scored 15 points, and the host Bulldogs (17-4, 9-3 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) shot 58.1 percent from the field in the first half.
Bowie State took a 47-24 lead over the Braves (7-17, 1-11) at halftime. Chowan matched Bowie point-for-point in the second half, but the Bulldogs led by as many as 30.
Women
Bowie State 63, Chowan 51: The host Bulldogs (5-14, 5-7 CIAA) got over their jitters at 11:48 mark of the first half when Jasmine Jacobs made two free throws to give them the lead for good at 10-9.
Bowie State shot 50 percent from the field to take a 34-23 lead at halftime. Brooke Miles led Bowie with 18 points. Talaya Lynch had a game-high 22 points for the Braves (8-14, 3-9).
