Loyola stifles Rider for fifth consecutive victory, 63-46

Loyola scored 18 unanswered points against Rider in the first half, leading to the Greyhounds' fifth consecutive win Friday night in front of a sold-out Reitz Arena crowd, 63-46.

Forward Erik Etherly led the Greyhounds (17-5, 10-2 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) with 15 points, Robert Olson had 14 and Dylon Cormier (Cardinal Gibbons) added 12. Shane Walker had a season-high 12rebounds plus seven points.

Rider's 46 points were the fewest allowed by Loyola since it defeated Niagara in February 1992.

The Greyhounds have held their past five opponents to under 57 points, and Loyola is off to its best start in its NCAA Division I history (the Greyhounds moved to Division I in 1981-82).

Olson scored eight of his points during the 18-0 run that increased Loyola's 6-5 lead and made it 24-5 when he hit his second 3-pointer in three possessions at 8:44 of the first half.

Loyola, which shot 51.7 percent (15-for-29) from the field in the first half, held Rider to 13 percent (3-for-23).

The sellout was Loyola's first at Reitz since 2008.

Rider fell to 9-15 and 6-6.

U.S. Merchant Marine 73, Goucher 62: Forward Marcus Cotton had 25 points and eight rebounds for the host Gophers (3-17, 0-10 Landmark), but they weren't enough in a loss to the Mariners (9-12, 4-6).

The Merchant Marine shot 51 percent from the field and had 25 points off turnovers. Goucher shot 33 percent from the field.

Women

Merchant Marine 67, Goucher 64: Freshman guard Demi Van Der Wal's 24 points led the visiting Mariners (8-11, 4-6 Landmark) to their second win this season over the Gophers (5-16, 1-9).

Precious Kollock led Goucher with 17 points.
