41 losses and counting as VCU defeats Towson men, 67-42

Rob Brandenberg scored 16 points and the host Virginia Commonwealth men's basketball team used pressure defense Wednesday night to hand Towson its DivisionI-record 41st straight loss dating to last season, 67-42.

Robert Nwankwo had 16 points for the Tigers (0-22, 0-10 Colonial Athletic Association). The Rams (17-5, 8-2) have won 17 of 18 meetings between the schools by 18.2 points per game.

Towson is the third straight opponent and sixth this season that VCU has held under 50 points. The Rams have won six straight games.

McDaniel 58, Swarthmore 46: Freshman Doug Macrone (19 points) had five second-half 3-pointers to rally the visiting Green Terror (7-11, 4-7 Centennial Conference) past the Garnet (1-17, 1-10).

St. Mary's 64, Hood 46: Christian Macauley scored 16points to lead the host Seahawks (13-5, 7-2 Capital Athletic Conference) past the Blazers (12-6, 4-5).

Salisbury 63, Stevenson 56: The visiting Sea Gulls (10-8, 3-6 CAC) built an early lead and held it throughout. Mike Maczko had 13 points for Salisbury, and Greg Collins had a game-high 23 for the Mustangs (4-15, 1-9).

Washington College 73, Ursinus 66: Kevin Breslin (St. Maria Goretti) scored a career-high and game-best 36points, and the Shoremen (12-6, 8-3 Centennial) ended a 13-game losing streak at the Bears' court. Ursinus fell to 7-11, 6-5.

York 81, Frostburg State 73: The host Spartans (12-7, 7-3 CAC) took sole possession of third place in the league. DeSean Antoine led the Bobcats (9-10, 6-4) with 20 points.

Franklin & Marshall 65, Johns Hopkins 40: Visiting Hopkins (10-8, 6-5 Centennial) lost its fourth straight.

 

UMES 59, Lincoln (Pa.) 45: Chelsea Sanders had 23 points, and the host Hawks (6-11) outscored the Lions (5-15) 35-21 in the second half.

UMES shot 12-of for-26 from the field in the second half to break a 24-24 halftime tie at 24.

The Hawks held Lincoln scoreless for seven minutes and scored 10 unanswered points.

Boston University 59, UMBC 53: The Terriers (15-6, 8-0 America East) went on an 18-2 run against the Retrievers (11-10, 5-3), whose 14-game home conference winning streak ended.

Lehigh 50, Navy 46: The visiting Hawks (12-8, 5-1 Patriot League) shot 52 percent in the second half and held the Mids (10-10, 3-3) to 13 points. Alix Membreno and Audrey Bauer each had nine points for Navy.

Johns Hopkins 57, Franklin & Marshall 46: Alex Vassila scored 12 points, and the visiting Blue Jays (16-2, 11-2 Centennial) won their fourth straight.

Hopkins led for most of the game, but the Diplomats (12-6, 9-4) were able to wrestle a one-point lead, 26-25, with 1:15 left in the first half. Hopkins' Katie Brooks made a layup with 21 seconds left for a 27-26 halftime lead. The Blue Jays never trailed again.

St. Mary's 71, Hood 52: Joanna Murray and Raven Owens scored 18 points each to power the host Seahawks (8-11, 6-4 CAC) past the Blazers (5-13, 1-9).

Rachel Wiley had a career-high 19 points and 10 rebounds for Hood. St. Mary's opened with a 6-0 run and never trailed.

Hood trailed by seven before closing to 21-20 with 7:23 left. But, St. Mary's finished the first half with a 15-5 run and 36-25 lead at the half.

Salisbury 59, Stevenson 47: Cinthia Ruiz hit a layup with 10:02 left in the first half for an 8-7 Sea Gulls lead, and Salisbury didn't trail never trailed again. Anna Hackett led the Sea Gulls (10-7, 7-2 CAC) with 17 points, and Sam Murray had 10 for the host Mustangs (6-12, 2-8).

Ursinus 61, Washington College 43: Lindsay Teuber had game highs of 23 points and 13 rebounds, including her 1,000th career point, to lift the host Bears (9-9, 8-5 Centennial) over the Shorewomen (11-7, 6-7).

Ursinus scored eight of the first 10 points and never trailed. Meghan Tait led Washington College with 13 points.

York 69, Frostburg State 33: The visiting Bobcats (5-14, 3-7 CAC), led by Elizabeth Erickson with 16 points, shot 22.4 percent for the game.
