State hoops: Morgan State, Navy men are still winless

Five players scored in double figures to lift Northern Iowa to a 73-53 victory over Morgan State on Thursday night in the Cancun Challenge at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Guard Blake Bozeman scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Bears (0-3).

Guards Deon Mitchell and Paul Jesperson each scored 13 points for the Panthers (3-0).

Guard Donte Pretlow hit a layup with two seconds left in the first half to give Morgan State a 30-29 lead at the break. Bozeman scored 15 points in the first 20 minutes.

But Northern Iowa's Jeremy Morgan hit a 3-pointer to open the second half and launched a 13-4 Northern Iowa run.

Providence 88, Navy 51: LaDontae Henton scored 22 points and Kris Dunn handed out a career-high 14 assists as the host Friars won the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament opener at Dunkin Donuts Center.

James Hemphill led Navy (0-3) with 10 points, while Edward Alade added nine and a team-high five rebounds.

Senior leader Brandon Venturini had just three points before fouling out with 12:25 left as the Midshipmen finished with fewer than 60 points for the third straight time to begin the season.

Freshman Ben Bentil scored a season-high 18 points off the bench for Providence (3-0).

No. 15 VCU 106, UMES 66: Terry Larrier's 21 points led the host Rams (3-0) over the Hawks (1-3).

Women

Morgan State 66, Washington Adventist 44: Tracey Carrington (Dundalk) scored 21 points to lead the host Bears (2-2) past the Shock (2-3).

VCU 72, UMES 50: Isis Thorpe's 15 points led the visiting Rams (3-1) past the Hawks (0-3).

Navy 79, Mary Washington 59: Sarah Reilly led the host Midshipmen (1-2) with 16 points as they rallied from a 33-30 halftime deficit to beat the Eagles (2-1).
