Patapsco Valley hike

Saturday, Dec. 2: This 10-mile figure-eight hike in Baltimore County uses a combination of marked and unmarked trails to travel from Oella to the Pickall area and then return by different paths. Total ascent will be 1000-plus feet with 2.5-3 mph pace. A few stream crossings and rocky sections; a few steep but relatively short climbs. Details: 443-805-5408.

Prettyboy hike

Dec. 6: Hike for about 4 miles in a loop on fire roads and the Prettyboy Trail along Prettyboy Reservoir off Mount Carmel Road in Baltimore County. Rockfish Shootout

Big Gunpowder Falls hike

Dec. 13: Start through the culvert on the Wildlands Trail to the Stocksdale Trail. Hills at the start. two small stream crossings. Some logs to climb over. You can stop after 4 miles. Details: 410-285-0835.

The upshot is that this oily forage fish that provides crucial food for numerous marine species, including rockfish, whales and sea birds, will continue to be managed for the next two years as a single, commercially harvested species.

Piney Run Park hike

Dec. 13: 8-mile lollipop hike in Carroll County. Meet at 9:45 am at St. Jos. Catholic Church at 915 Liberty Road in Eldersburg for a short carpool to the trailhead at the undeveloped side of the park. Some bushwhacking possible and a couple of stream crossings. Details: 410-608-0967.

Liberty Reservoir hike

Dec. 16: This 11-mile hike is a mixture of fire roads and paved roads, though all of the paved section is along Liberty Dam Road, which has a wide grass shoulder to walk on. Total elevation gain is a little over 1,200 feet. Moderate 2.5-3 mph pace. Details: 410-876-7053. Carpool cost: $1.

Patapsco Valley hike

Dec. 17: Seven-mile Howard County hike lnear the Davis Tunnel area. For experienced hikers who can maintain a continuous fast pace (2.75-3.3 mph). Half a dozen minor stream crossings, some rocky and rugged terrain, 800-plus feet of climbing. Details: 410 747-2868.

Gunpowder hike

Dec. 17: Hike 6 miles on a figure-eight loop of trails to east and west of Belair Road. Details: 410-744-6057.

Cromwell/Loch Raven hike

Middle Patuxent hike

Dec. 20: Relatively flat 7-mile hike at Middle Patuxent Environmental Areain Howard County. Details: 410-489-9849.

Prettyboy hike

Dec. 20: Hike 11 miles on narrow Prettyboy Trail from Shamberger’s Peninsula at Beckleysville Road to Prettyboy Dam. Dec. 24: Six-mile hike at Davis Tunnel area of Patapsco Valley State Park in Howard County. A few stream crossings and about 1,000 feet of climbing (including one rugged steep ascent), a little bit of bushwhacking, some rocky terrain. Pace: 2.5-3 mph. Details: 410 747-2868.

A Deer Creek kayak launch, named in honor of the late son of Harford County Director of Administration Billy Boniface, has opened on land owned by Harford County. Kayakers can take a paved road from Route 1 to the launch, called Benjamin's Bridge.

Dec. 27: Out-and-back 12-mile hike in McKeldin/Henryton Road areas of Patapsco Valley State Park in Carroll and Howard counties. One stream crossing; little rocky, rugged terrain. About 1,500 feet of elevation gain. Sections may be muddy if conditions are wet. Details: 410-596-6421.
