Teamwork from Maryland environmentalists — from elementary schoolers to nonprofit workers — could result in new oyster habitat, and consequently cleaner water, for the Chesapeake Bay. Maryland Coastal Conservation Association members and partners dumped 70 concrete reef balls into the bay on Thursday, the first deployment for the organization's Living Reef Action Campaign.

CCA reef ball update

Tuesday, Aug. 9: Mike Wissel of Coastal Conservation Association Maryland's Central Region chapter will discuss a recently completed reef ball project near Tilghman Island when he addresses the Northwest Chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association at 7:30 p.m. at the Patapsco Council No. 1960 Knights of Columbus Hall at 1010 Frederick Road in Catonsville. Wildlife shoot

Saturday, Aug. 13: Jay Fleming will lead the full-day Smith Island Photography Excursion in Tylerton. There will be an opportunity to photograph pelicans at the largest nesting colony on the Chesapeake Bay, a still-life –and -portrait shoot with a waterman, and a dusk session with a waterman fishing for crabs in a work boat. The founding students, identical twins Riley and Ian McGann of Marriottsville, won the Maryland Bass Nation high school championship in October to earn a ticket to the Costa Bassmaster High School National Championship, beginning Thursday at Kentucky Lake in Paris, Tenn., with an estimated 150 pairs from 40 states expected to compete.

Youth Fishing Derby

Saturday, Aug. 13: MSSA's KI Fishing club's Annual Youth Fishing Derby at Romancoke Pier on Route 8 South will be held from 9 a.m. to 11a.m. Awards and lunch at Kent Island American Legion No. 278 will be from 11:30a.m. to 1 p.m.

Hunter safety courses

Starting Aug. 17: Baltimore County Game & Fish Protective Association will conduct free hunter safety courses on club grounds at 3400 Northwind Road in Carney. The August session is Aug. 17, 18, 24 and 25 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Aug. 27 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The September session is Sept. 14, 15, 21 and 22 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sept. 24 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Class size is limited to 60 seats. Not enough people utilize the trails in urban cities and some don't even know that they exist, parks officials and hiking enthusiasts say. Hiking instead brings to mind the mountains of Western Maryland, Pennsylvania or Virginia. It's a way of thinking that the American Hiking Society, a Maryland non-profit charged with preserving the hiking experience, and other nature groups are trying to change.

White Perch Championship

Aug. 20: Coastal Conservation Association Maryland and Anglers Sports Center will present the White Perch Championship. Starts at 5:30 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. Weigh-ins at Anglers. $25 for single anglers, $50 for a boat; kids under 14 fish for free. Register at ccamd.org.

Survivor Strong race

Aug. 20: The National Center for Citizen Safety nonprofit, which aims to raise awareness on how to respond to domestic terrorism, will conduct the 2nd annual Survivor Strong 5K Fun Run & Walk at 6940 Columbia Gateway Drive. Register at nccsafe.org before Wednesday, Aug. 10, to receive a shirt.

Mourning dove season

Sept. 1-Oct. 8: The daily bag limit is 15. Possession limit is 45 birds. Shooting hours are noon to sunset.

I was in no way disappointed that this fish was a catfish and not some other, more "worthy and proper" gamefish.

Skipjack Bike Tour

Chesapeake Summer Slam

Now through Sept. 17: Anglers in Virginia and Maryland target big-five gamefish in the Chesapeake Bay in hopes of putting together the largest three-fish slam. Register at technicalfisherman.com.

Is it hyperbolic to decry that upper Chesapeake flounder fishing may be a dying art? I just don't hear about fishermen targeting, much less, catching them.

Skipjack run

Flounder tourney

Sept. 17-18: Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association's sixth-annual Mid Atlantic Flounder Tournament will be held on coastal bays and the Atlantic Ocean. Register at mssa.net.

Dock Day on the Bay

Red trout tournament

Oct. 15-22: First split of regular duck season. Maximum six6 ducks; no more than four mallards (only two hens), three wood ducks, two scaup, two redheads. No black ducks.

8th annual Hurd race

Oct. 29: The eighth annual Heather L. Hurd 5K Run & Kids Trick or Treat Walk will begin at 9 a.m. at Harford Community College. Registration for the 5K will be 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. at the Susquehanna Center. The walk for children 10 and younger will begin at 8 a.m. The race honors the memory of Heather L. Hurd, a history major at Harford Community College from 1999 to 2003, who was killed in 2008 by a distracted driver who was texting. The race was founded to raise funds for Remembrance Book Scholarships for Harford Community College students and to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving.
