Recreation and outdoors calendar (Aug. 5)

Black bear lottery

Through Aug. 31: The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is accepting applications for this year's black bear lottery. Successful applicants will receive a permit valid for the four-day hunting season, taking place Oct. 23-26 in Allegany, Frederick, Garrett and Washington counties. Hunters may apply by calling 855-855-3906 (weekdays, 7 a.m.-7 p.m.) or in person at a regional service center or one of more than 250 hunting and fishing license agents across the state. Each hunter's Department of Natural Resources ID number will serve as his lottery number. Details at eregulations.com/maryland/hunting/

Fisheries update

Tuesday, Aug. 8: Erik Zlokovitz, the recreational fishing and public access outreach coordinator for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, will address the Northwest Chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association. He'll give a midseason update on fisheries news and projects, and the latest news from the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. The meeting will be held at the Patapsco Council No. 1960 Knights of Columbus Hall at 1010 Frederick Road, Catonsville. Use the Beaumont Avenue (side) entrance. Fishing Derby

Saturday, Aug. 12: MSSA Kent Island chapter's "Fishing Derby" will be held off Romancoke Pier, Route 8 south, Kent Island. Free. Age groups: 3-5, 6-10 and 11-16.

White Perch Open

Aug. 20: Angler's Sports Center's "White Perch Open." Weigh-ins at Podickory Point Yacht Club. Fishing hours 6 a.m.-2 p.m. Official weigh-in 2-3 p.m. Party and fish fry: 3-7 p.m.

One-day rockfish tourney

Fall Gun & Outdoor Show

Summer Slam

Through Sept. 16: The "Summer Slam" tournament will be held on all tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries from the Susquehanna Flats to Chesapeake Bay-Bridge Tunnel. Four divisions: angler, fly, kayak and junior (ages 6-14). Entry fee is $40 per division.

Hurd 5K Spooktacular

Oct. 28: The Heather L. Hurd 5K Spooktacular will be held at Harford Community College. The race honors the memory of an HCC history major from 1999 to 2003 who was killed in 2008 by a distracted driver who was texting.
