Buoy discussion

Tuesday, July 12: Kim Couranz of the Chesapeake Bay office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will talk about the Chesapeake Bay Interpretive Buoy System at a meeting of the Northwest Chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association. The system's 10 buoys provide real-time weather and water condition reports. The meeting at the Patapsco Council No. 1960 Knights of Columbus Hall, 1010 Frederick Road, Catonsville, will start at 7:30 p.m. (doors 6:45). Please Use the Beaumont Avenue (side) entrance. O.C. Marlin Kid's

If you're enjoying a nice bump in crabbing compared to last summer — I'm seeing more heavier crabs, especially — that's because the Chesapeake's blue crab population is growing, according to a study released last week by Chesapeake Bay Program.

Saturday, July 16: Baltimore Metro Horseshoe Club will host its National Horseshoe Pitchers Association-sanctioned Summer Classic Tournament, with registration starting at 9 a.m. and pitching at 10 a.m. Site is Pottery Farm Park Courts, Back River Recreation Center, 801 Back River Neck Road, Essex. Ocean Games

Saturday, July 16: The fourth annual Ocean Games will start at 10 a.m. just off the Boardwalk at Caroline Street, Ocean City. The games feature a WOWSA-sanctioned series of 1-, 3- and 9-mile swims, as well as 4- and 2-mile elite and open paddleboard races as part of the East Coast SUP Cup. And for the first time, an Ultimate disc tournament will be added. The games benefit Johns Hopkins' Brain and Stroke Rehabilitation Program, for which they have raised more than $55,000 since their debut in 2013. Details and registration: oceangamesusa.org.
