July 12: Kim Couranz of the Chesapeake Bay office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will talk about the Chesapeake Bay Interpretive Buoy System at a meeting of the Northwest Chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association. The system's 10 buoys provide real-time weather and water condition reports. O.C. Marlin Kids

July 15-17: The 12th annual O.C. Marlin Club Kids Classic will be held at 9659 Golf Course Road, Ocean City. Details: 410-213-1613 or ocmarlinclub.com.

One hour, 36 minutes and 52 seconds after starting, 48-year-old Debbie Dawson was the first woman to finish the 4.4-mile race across the Chesapeake Bay, beating two 20-year-olds who finished second and third.

Ocean Games

July 16: The fourth annual Ocean Games will start at 10 a.m. just off the Boardwalk at Caroline Street, Ocean City. The games feature a WOWSA-sanctioned series of 1-, 3- and 9-mile swims, as well as 4- and 2-mile elite and open paddleboard races as part of the East Coast SUP Cup. And for the first time, an Ultimate disc tournament will be added. The games benefit Johns Hopkins' Brain and Stroke Rehabilitation Program, for which they have raised more than $55,000 since their debut in 2013. Details and registration: oceangamesusa.org.

On Feb. 8, 1916, Thomas Tochtermann opened a bait shop on the first floor of his home at 1925 Eastern Avenue, hoping to make a few bucks. Folks bought it hook, line and sinker, so soon after, he began selling that stuff, too. One hundred years later, Tochterman's Fishing Tackle keeps reeling them in. Same locale, same family. Baseball Hall of Famer Ted Williams shopped here. So have U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski, former Orioles slugger Boog Powell and the late Gov. William Donald Schaefer.

There are few anglers more revered than Frederick native Bernard "Lefty" Kreh. Kreh, who turned 90 last month, has fished for nearly 70 years with everyone from Ted Williams to Fidel Castro, and from President Jimmy Carter to Ernest Hemingway. Enshrined in numerous fishing Halls of Fame, he has been honored by the U.S. Postal Service, which issued a stamp commemorating a fly that Kreh made.
