Canoe and scoop

Saturdays through October: Baltimore City Outdoor Recreation provides certified staff and equipment for paddling and cleaning up the shoreline of Middle Branch Park. Groups of up to 20 participate from 9 a.m. to noon. Details: Contact Molly Gallant at molly.gallant@baltimorecity.gov.

When Mikah Meyer sets out on his cross-country trip, in a van purchased from Austin, there will be an odd kind of symmetry. Brett Austin's wife, Amanda, succumbed to cancer in August 2013. His son, Matthew, died five months before, a period of grief, mourning and healing now nearly 1,200 days long. Meyer's tour of 411 National Park Service sites — he would become the youngest-ever person to visit them all — is scheduled to take 1,116 days.

At some point next February, Andrew McKissick's swimming career will end, and the early-morning wake-ups, long hours in the pool and stress of competition will be in the past. But so will the years of memories he has forged at the UMBC Aquatic Complex.

Pier Point tourney

One hour, 36 minutes and 52 seconds after starting, 48-year-old Debbie Dawson was the first woman to finish the 4.4-mile race across the Chesapeake Bay, beating two 20-year-olds who finished second and third.

MSSA Kent Island

OC Tuna

At 56, Vince Cooke is challenging Route 66, the fabled byway that starts in Chicago and ends at the beach in Santa Monica, Calif. Cooke plans to cycle it all — an eight-state trek that will take him across the Continental Divide and through the Mojave Desert — in 28 days.

Ocean Games

July 16: The fourth annual Ocean Games will start at 10 a.m. just off the Boardwalk at Caroline Street, Ocean City. The games feature a WOWSA-sanctioned series of 1-, 3- and 9-mile swims, as well as 4- and 2-mile elite and open paddleboard races as part of the East Coast SUP CUP. Casting For Recovery makes no claims to heal. Yet women who've participated in the national non-profit program, which brings breast cancer survivors together for a junket of fly fishing and fellowship, say it buoys their spirits to hook a rainbow trout in a stress-free setting with others who are in the same boat.

By placing fifth in their respective divisions in the Atlantic Regional, the Helmicks, who are husband and wife, qualified for the CrossFit Games. Together, they own the CrossFit ReVamped gym in Columbia, where they will host the second annual Vekter Games this weekend.
