Restoring coral reefs

Tuesday, Jan. 12: John Page Williams, senior naturalist for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, will speak about restoring coral reefs in the Chesapeake Bay. The meeting of the Northwest Chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Patapsco Council No. 1960 Knights of Columbus Hall at 1010 Frederick Road, Catonsville. Gunpowder trout

Jan. 20: Mark Staley, the Central Region manager of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources' Inland Fisheries, and Gunpowder Riverkeeper Theaux LeGardeur will address the watershed's health and challenges at a meeting of Maryland Trout Unlimited. Thompson 5K Run/Walk

April 24: The 5th Annual Adam Thompson 5K Run/Walk will be held at 8 a.m. at Harford Community College, 401 Thomas Run Road in Bel Air. The race honors the memory of Adam Thompson, an HCC student who was killed in an automobile accident in 2011. Proceeds will benefit scholarships supporting students attending the school. Maryland Half Marathon

May 14: Registration is open for the eighth annual Maryland Half Marathon & 5K in Maple Lawn (Howard County). The event benefits the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center. The races will be in Maple Lawn in Howard County. There will be a kids fun run and kids zone, as well as music and a postrace festival. The half marathon starts at 8 a.m., the 5K at 8:30 and the kids race at 8:45. Registration for the half marathon is $75 until race day and $90 on race day. Registration for the 5K is $40. The kids fun run is $20, and the kids zone is free. St. Michaels running

May 21: Registration is open for the fifth annual St. Michaels Running Festival. There will also be a 1K Kids Fun Run for children ages 12 and younger. Information: runstm.com.

Ocean Games

July 16: The fourth-annual Ocean Games will start at 10 a.m. just off the Boardwalk at Caroline Street. The games feature a WOWSA-sanctioned series of 1-, 3- and 9-mile swims, as well as 4- and 2-mile elite and open paddleboard races. And for the first time, an Ultimate disc tournament will be added. The games benefit Johns Hopkins' Brain and Stroke Rehabilitation Program, for which they have raised more than $55,000 since their debut in 2013. Details and registration: oceangamesusa.org.
