Eighteen players from the team’s 2017 roster are not on the current roster.
Seven of them have officially migrated to other schools and will play for their new teams in 2018, including starting defenseman Brian Philbin (Hofstra), backup goalkeeper Cameron Carpenter (Massachusetts) and reserve attackman Austin Short (Salisbury).
To combat the mass defections, coach Tom Gravante added 26 freshmen to the roster. Gravante said he doesn’t fault the players who left for their decisions.
“The reality is, they’re young, and they’re still developing who they are and their tastes and preferences,” he said. “So we’ve had big recruiting classes. … It’s about recruiting. So once you get your program in place and a system in place and the guys are buying in, then it comes down to reloading.”
“It’s about recruiting,” he said. “I’m anticipating that we’re not going to have that big of a loss this year, and we’re not going to bring in that many kids because we don’t have to. … We’re almost there in terms of reloading versus rebuilding.”
