Alabama quarterback Mac Jones wins 2020 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award

Alabama quarterback Mac Jones on Monday was named the winner of the 2020 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

Jones, a Heisman Trophy finalist, is the third Alabama quarterback to win the award named after the Baltimore Colts great, which is presented annually to the top upperclassman quarterback set to graduate with their class.

The semifinalists, finalists and award recipient are selected by the Golden Arm Award Selection Committee, a group of journalists, former coaches and players, general managers, commentators, announcers and other former award recipients. Jones was picked from a top 10 that included Notre Dame’s Ian Book, Texas’ Sam Ehlinger, Ohio State’s Justin Fields, Miami’s D’Eriq King, Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, Texas A&M’s Kellen Mond, Iowa State’s Brock Purdy, Florida’s Kyle Trask and BYU’s Zach Wilson.

In his first full season as the starting quarterback after backing up stars Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa, Jones led the Crimson Tide to an 12-0 record, a Southeastern Conference title and the top seed in the College Football Playoff. In addition to being named firs-team All-SEC, the 22-year-old is also the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, completing 77% of his passes with a passer rating of 203.0, both first in the nation.

The senior from Jacksonville, Florida, has thrown for 4,036 yards (second most in the nation) and 36 touchdowns (tied for second most) this season. He’s recorded four of the Crimson Tide’s 10 400-plus yards passing performances in program history and joins AJ McCarron (2013) and Jay Barker (1994) as the only Alabama players to capture the award. Jones is also a finalist for the Davey O’Brien, Manning, Maxwell and Walter Camp Player of the Year awards.

This year’s Golden Arm award presentation will be pre-recorded and released Thursday, Jan. 7, on the Golden Arm Award social channels and shared by Alabama.
