State roundup (Jan. 18): Loyola Maryland men fall to Boston University in OT; UMES women win

Eric Fanning scored 37 points to lead host Boston University (10-9, 3-3 Patriot League) over Loyola Maryland in overtime, 87-84, on Monday night.

Fanning shot 9 of 11 from the field and was 2 of 3 from beyond the arc. He also hit of 17 of 22 attempts from the free-throw line.C


Jarred Jones led the Greyhounds (4-13, 3-3) with 20 points and had a game-high 11 rebounds.

Bethune-Cookman 62, Morgan State 50: Ricky Johnson scored 19 points and the Bulldogs beat the Bears.


Johnson was 6 of 10 from the field with four 3-pointers for the Wildcats (6-13, 3-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). Jordan Potts added 14 points.

The team had program-record 12 blocked shots — seven from Mario Moody, his career high, and five more from LaRon Smith.

Morgan State (3-15, 1-4) was led by Rasean Simpson with 17 points and nine rebounds. Bethune-Cookman closed the first half on a 19-3 run to turn a three-point lead into a 38-19 advantage at the break. Morgan State trimmed the deficit to nine with 5:53 left, but scored just once after that.


Junior Alexis Carter and sophomore Jessica Harris combined for 26 points for Mount St. Mary's, but host Robert Morris edged the Mountaineers, 61-56, in Northeast Conference play Monday.

Carter had a team-high 16 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field and added a career-high five steals. Harris had 10 points, and Sarafina Arthur-Williams added eight points and nine rebounds for the Mountaineers (4-13, 2-4).

The Colonials (11-6, 5-1) had three players reach double-figures in the contest, led by Jocelynne Jones' 12 points. Niki Stamolamprou and Leah Wormack added 10 points each to help pace the Robert Morris offense.

Mount St. Mary's trailed, 53-52, following a pair of free throws from Kathleen Belanger-Finn with 5:30 remaining before a Jones layup and Ashley Ravelli jumper pushed the Colonials' lead to 57-52. Carter responded with a basket for the Mount, cutting the deficit to 57-54, but Robert Morris hit four straight free throws to extend the lead to 61-54.


Harris converted a pair of free throws for the Mount with seven seconds remaining to trim the Robert Morris lead to 61-56, but the Colonials were able to run out the clock on the ensuing possession to secure the victory.

UMES 63, South Carolina State 56: Moengaroa Subritzky scored 26 points to lead the Hawks (4-13, 2-3 MEAC) over the Bulldogs (7-9, 3-3).

TeAmber Burke added 14 points for UMES, which shot 75 percent from the field (12 of 16) in the second half, as well as 6-for-6 from beyond the arc.

Ashleigh Outler scored 15 points and Brittany Dumgoole added 14 for South Carolina State.

Bethune-Cookman 63, Morgan State 48: Tykyrah Williams scored 17 points, but was the only Bears player to finish in double figures as Morgan State (6-12, 4-2 MEAC) fell to the Wildcats (10-8, 4-1).

Kailyn Williams led Bethune-Cookman with 22 points on 10 of 14 shooting and added seven rebounds.


Braennan Farrar and Lexus Spears each scored eight points for the Bears, who had their three-game win streak ended.
