Lax roundup: Salisbury's Berkman the first men's coach to 400 wins

Salisbury's Jim Berkman became the first coach in any division of NCAA men's lacrosse to earn his 400th career win when the visiting Sea Gulls beat Mary Washington, 16-8, Wednesday.

Matt Cannone (two goals, four assists) moved up to No. 2 in career points at Salisbury (12-0, 4-0 Capital Athletic Conference) with 306, trailing Jason Coffman with 451.


Erik Krum led the Sea Gulls with seven points and six goals for the game.

Goucher 13, Eastern 7: Matt Lynch and Zachary Fratella each had three goals and an assist to power the host Gophers (11-1) past the Eagles (6-3).

State women

Stony Brook 16, UMBC 6: The visiting Retrievers (4-7, 1-2 America East) trailed by a goal at the half before the Seawolves (9-3, 2-0) scored three goals in the opening five minutes of the second half.

Salisbury 13, St. Mary's 1: The visiting Sea Gulls (11-0, 4-0 CAC) jumped out to an 8-0 halftime lead and were never threatened. Lauren Feusahrens had six goals and Katie Bollhorst (St. Mary's) added five for Salisbury. Lauren Gray (South River) had the lone goal for the Seahawks with 1:44 left.

Mary Washington 14, Stevenson 10: The host Eagles (8-3, 4-2 CAC) broke the game open with a 3-0 run with 9:41 left.

Leah Warner had a hat trick for the Mustangs (6-5, 3-2), who committed 20 turnovers.

Gettysburg 17, McDaniel 3: Paige Messersmith (Dulaney) scored twice, and the visiting Green Terror (4-7, 1-4 Centennial Conference) lost their fourth straight. The Bullets improved to 9-1, 5-0.

National men

No. 15 Villanova 15, No. 20 Georgetown 7: Jack Rice scored four goals, and the host Wildcats (6-4, 2-0 Big East) opened with a 3-0 run.

The loss ended a nine-game winning streak over Villanova for the Hoyas that dated to 1993. The Hoyas fell to 5-4, 1-1.

National women

No. 16 Vanderbilt 19, Presbyterian 5: Katie Mastropieri and Abby Wheeler each had a hat trick to lead 11 Commodores who scored.

No. 20 Albany 10, Binghamton 3: Mel Rorie scored three goals, and the host Great Danes (8-3, 1-1 America East) held the Bearcats (3-7, 0-3) scoreless in the second half.
