No. 6 Notre Dame men's lacrosse routs Jacksonville in season opener

No. 6 Notre Dame used hat tricks from Conor Doyle (Gilman) and Matt Kavanagh Sunday night to defeat host Jacksonville (0-2), 19-7, in its season opener. The Irish started off strong in the Moe's Southwest Grill Lacrosse Classic, outscoring the Dolphins 8-1 in the first quarter, which featured Kavanagh's first two goals.

The Dolphins scored the first two goals of the second quarter to cut the deficit to 8-3, but that was as close as they got. The Irish lead had ballooned to 16-4 heading into the fourth quarter.

Tom Moore and Chase Mcintyre each had two goals for Jacksonville.

No. 2 Syracuse 17, No. 7 Albany 16, OT: Henry Schoonmaker scored the game-winning goal 28 seconds into the extra period to lead host Syracuse (2-0) over the Great Danes (0-1). The Orange scored the first four goals of the game, but a resilient Albany team tied the game at 9. Schoonmaker's game-winner came on the Orange's first possession of the extra period. Syracuse's Randy Staats and Albany's Ty Thompson tied for a game-high five goals.

No. 3 North Carolina 25, Manhattan 5: The Tar Heels (2-0) got hat tricks from Joey Sankey, Chad Tutton and Shane Simpson as they cruised by the visiting Jaspers (0-2).

No. 9 St. John's 15, Holy Cross 13: The Red Storm (1-0) got hat tricks from Kieran McArdle, Colin Keegan and Kevin Cernuto. Sean Wilkinson scored four goals for the visiting Crusaders (0-1).

No. 10 Virginia 11, Drexel 10: Mark Cockerton scored the winning goal with 15 seconds left to lift Virginia (3-0) over the Dragons. Cole Shafer and Nick Trizano led host Drexel (0-1) with four goals each.

UMass 12, No. 15 Ohio State 11, OT: Nick Mariano scored with seven seconds remaining in overtime to lead the Minutemen (2-0) over the Buckeyes (0-2) at the Moe's Southwest Grill Lacrosse Classic. Mariano led UMass with four goals, while Reegan Comeault, Carter Brown (Calvert Hall) and Adam Trombley each scored hat tricks for Ohio State.

Bryant 12, No. 16 Bucknell 9: James Tucker had three goals in the Bulldogs' (1-1) upset of the visiting Bison (1-1). Bucknell's David Dickson and Thomas Flibotte had hat tricks.

Lehigh 7, No. 19 Villanova 6, 3OT: After two scoreless extra periods, Kurtis Kaunas scored the Mountain Hawks' (3-0) game-winning goal with seven seconds remaining in the third overtime. Austin Frederick (McDonogh) led Villanova (0-1) with two goals.

UMass 12, No. 15 Ohio State 11, OT: Nick Mariano scored his fourth goal with seven seconds remaining in overtime to lead the Minutemen (2-0) over the Buckeyes (0-2).

No. 3 Syracuse 18, Canisius 6: Taylor Poplawski led the host No. 3 Orange (3-0) with four goals and Kayla Treanor added three against the Golden Griffins (0-1).

No. 6 Duke 11, William & Mary 8: Brigid Smith, Kerrin Maurer, Taylor Trimble and Molly Quirke led the visiting Blue Devils (3-0) with two goals each. Jenna Dougherty and Taelor Salmon each scored twice for the Tribe (0-1).
