Outlook: The Blue Devils opened the season with victories at High Point and against Air Force. They are 5-3 against the Pioneers and have won the past two meetings, but will reportedly play their third straight game without three suspended starters in senior attackman Kyle Keenan, senior long-stick midfielder Brian Dailey and junior defenseman Chris Coady. Denver returns five of six starters on offense and added Maryland transfer and sophomore midfielder Connor Cannizzaro to the mix.

No. 5 Northwestern women (1-0) vs. No. 8 Virginia (0-0)

at Kennesaw State in Atlanta

When: Saturday, 3:30 p.m.

Outlook: To escape winter weather for an early matchup, the two 2014 NCAA semifinalists return to the home of one of Division I's newest lacrosse programs. In last season's opener, Northwestern edged the Cavaliers, 13-12, on a free-position goal with 17 seconds left and this one could be just as close. The Wildcats are coming off a 12-11 overtime victory at USC in which they rallied from a 7-0 deficit. They've won eight straight over Virginia, but the Cavaliers have nine returning starters while Northwestern is reloading after considerable turnover on both sides of the ball.
