After getting off to a fast start and hanging with host St. John's through Sunday's first half, UMBC faltered in the second half, leading to an lopsided 89-59 defeat.
Red Storm freshman Moe Harkless led all scorers with 18 points, while teammates Nurideen Lindsey and God'sgift Achiuwa chipped in with 15 points each and 10 and eight rebounds, respectively.
The Retrievers took a 10-3 lead in the first four minutes, and St. John's (3-0) countered with a 9-0 run. Leading 41-35 at the half, the Red Storm pulled away with a 13-4 run in the opening seven minutes of the second half.
Sophomore Chase Plummer had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and junior Brian Neller had 13 points off the bench to lead UMBC (0-2).
UMBC turned the ball over 20 times and shot only 32.8 percent from the field.
Navy 88, Penn State-Altoona 54: Sophomore forward J.J. Avila was perfect from the field and the free-throw line, scoring 14 points to lead the host Midshipmen.
Navy jumped out to a 49-21 halftime lead. The Midshipmen's defense hampered the Cougars all day, forcing 22 turnovers and holding them to 38 percent shooting.
Thurgood Wynn, Carlton Montgomery and Brandon Venturini each scored 10 points off the Navy bench. Navy freshman guard Donya Jackson (Calvert Hall) added seven points and three rebounds.
Guard Eric Sarra had 18 points to lead Penn State-Altoona.
Women
Loyola 42, Navy 38: Senior guard Miriam McKenzie (Oakland Mills) paced the host Greyhounds (1-1) with 20 points and eight rebounds to top the Midshipmen (0-2) in a defensive struggle.
Junior Alyssa Sutherland grabbed 10 rebounds for Loyola, and junior Katie Sheahin added seven steals.
The Greyhounds allowed only 12 points in the first half. Jade Geif led the Midshipmen with nine points.
UMBC 68, Monmouth 64: Led by three players with doubledoubles, the visiting Retrievers (2-0) knocked off the Hawks (0-1).
Senior center Tope Obajolu (John Carroll) had a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead UMBC.
Senior forward Erin Brown added 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Retrievers, and freshman point guard Lauren Chase had 10 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds.
Bloomsburg 53, Bowie State 43: Kelsey Gallagher scored 14 points and added seven rebounds to carry the Huskies (2-0) over the Lady Bulldogs (0-2) in the Clarion Hotel Tipoff Classic, hosted by Shepherd.
