Wilbon and Van Pelt to headline UM panel on racism in sports
The Shirley Povich Symposium on "Racism & Sports: How Far Have We Really Come?" will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center at Maryland. Michael Wilbon, an ESPN "Pardon the Interruption" co-host and an ESPN.com columnist, and Scott Van Pelt, a "SportsCenter" anchor and an ESPN radio host, will headline the event. The panel also will have Kevin Blackistone, a visiting professor at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism and a panelist on ESPN's "Around the Horn"; Kara Lawson, a WNBA veteran and basketball analyst; and Damion Thomas, the curator of sports at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture and a former Maryland professor. Television host Maury Povich, son of the late Washington Post columnist Shirley Povich for whom the symposium is named, will moderate. The event is free and open to the public.

Maryland, UMBC win men's soccer regular-season titles
Mael Corboz, George Campbell (McDonogh) and David Kabelik scored as Maryland (11-5-2) captured the Big Ten regular-season men's soccer championship and claimed the top seed in the conference tournament with a 3-2 win Wednesday night at Rutgers. In the quarterfinals, they will host eighth-seeded Rutgers or ninth-seeded Wisconsin at 1 p.m. Sunday. Maryland has won four straight Big Ten Conference matches since a 1-2-1 start and extended its streak of regular-season league titles to three (two Atlantic Coast Conference, one Big Ten).

More men's soccer: Malcolm Harris (McDonogh) and Marquez Fernandez (McDonogh) each scored his first goal of the season as UMBC (10-5-3, 6-0-1) earned a 2-0 victory over host Stony Brook (4-13-1, 2-5) to win its second consecutive America East Conference regular-season title. The Retrievers receive a first-round bye and will host a semifinal in the America East tournament Wednesday.
Field hockey: Maryland senior midfielder and forward Maxine Fluharty, who has 15 goals, including four game-winners, was named Big Ten Conference Player of the Year. Junior Sarah Sprink was named Defensive Player of the Year, and Moira Putsch earned Freshman of the Year honors. Missy Meharg was named Big Ten Coach of the Year. Fluharty and Sprink were named to the All-Big Ten first team, and redshirt senior Brooke Cabrera, senior Katie Gerzabek and junior Anna Dessoye made the second team. Junior Alyssa Parker (Glenelg) received one of the league's Sportsmanship Awards. … Hood junior forward and midfielder Jessie Herbert (Century) was named to the All-Commonwealth Conference second team.
Football: Towson defensive end Ryan Delaire was named to the College Football Performance Awards watch list for the Football Championship Subdivision National Defensive Performer of the Year.
Golf: UMES finished third in the 13th Professional Golfers Association Jones Cup at Wanamaker Course in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Tiana Jones, who won the Women's Individual Invitational at the PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship, paced the Hawks with a final-round 74 in the 36-hole event.
Cross country: Johns Hopkins junior Sophia Meehan was named Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III South Women's Runner of the Week.

Howard's Strunk honored for football win vs. River Hill
Bruce Strunk was named Ravens High School Coach of the Week after leading undefeated Howard to a 7-0 victory over River Hill on Friday to clinch at least a share of the Howard County title. The Lions, who improved to 9-0, gained more than 200 yards on offense, and Najee Savage scored the only touchdown, five seconds into the fourth quarter on a 9-yard run. The defense held the Hawks to less than 100 yards of total offense.

Golf: Baltimore's Classic Five will host their 19th annual Turkey Shoot outings on Thanksgiving morning at Pine Ridge, Mount Pleasant, Forest Park and Clifton Park golf courses.
