Whittenburg finishes 7th on parallel bars in world finals

U.S. men's national-team gymnast Donnell Whittenburg (Edgewood) overcame a blunder during his routine in the men's parallel bars finals at the World Championships in Nanning, China, to score 14.366, good for seventh place and second among American gymnasts in the event. "Things happen in this sport; anything can happen," Whittenburg told USA Gymnastics. "I finished my routine, so that's pretty good."

Marathon: Tatyana McFadden of Clarksville won her fourth consecutive Chicago Marathon in the women's wheelchair race. McFadden won her fifth overall title in the race with a time of 1 hour, 44 minutes, 50 seconds.

Major League Soccer: D.C. United (16-9-7) ended its 12-game losing streak against the Houston Dynamo (11-15-6) with a 3-1 victory. Former Maryland defender Taylor Kemp scored his first career goal.

Women's college soccer: UMBC's Jen Nance (Severna Park) earned a program-record seventh shutout this season in a 1-0 win as the Retrievers (9-3-2, 1-1-2 America East Conference) beat visiting Maine (3-7-4, 1-1-3). ... Towson (3-8-3, 0-4-1 CAA) and host Charleston (5-9-1, 1-4-1 CAA) played to a 0-0 draw. ... Navy (8-3-4) came up with a 2-1 victory atPenn (5-4-2). ... Maryland (5-4-4, 3-2-3 Big Ten) rallied from a first-half deficit but couldn't find a go-ahead goal and settled for a 1-1 tie at Ohio State (5-7-2, 2-4-2) on Saturday night.

College field hockey: No. 2 Maryland powered past visiting Pennsylvania, 9-0, with the Terps' biggest offensive outburst of the season. Eight Terps scored against the Quakers (4-6), including six off penalty corners, as Maryland (11-2) won its sixth straight. ... Towson (2-10, 0-3 Colonial Athletic Association Conference) fell to Delaware, 2-1. The Blue Hens improved to 9-5, 3-0.

Women's college volleyball: Despite moving into eighth place all time in career kills with 988, senior outside hitter Hannah Schmidt (Mount de Sales) and host UMBC (8-9, 2-2 America East) fell, 3-0, to New Hampshire (10-11, 3-1). ... Maryland lost, 14-25, 17-25, 17-25, to No. 6 Wisconsin in its third straight loss in as many games to a ranked opponent. ... Loyola Maryland (2-18, 0-7 Patriot League) lost to Colgate, 25-20, 25-13, 25-12. The Raiders moved to 9-7, 3-3.
