Digest: Terps shortstop Kevin Smith earns MVP honor in Cape Cod Baseball League

Maryland junior shortstop Kevin Smith was named Most Valuable Player of the Cape Cod Baseball League's Championship Series after leading the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox to the league title Saturday. Over the three-game series, Smith went 6-for-12 with a home run and three RBIs. Smith helped lead the Red Sox to victory in the second game with a three-hit, two-RBI performance, and had the winning RBI in the series-clinching 3-0 victory. For the playoffs, Smith batted .370 with two doubles, three home runs and seven RBIs. He was named a CCBL All-Star along with fellow Terp Nick Dunn.

Men's college basketball: Coppin State will participate in the third annual MGM Grand Main Event tournament Nov. 21 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The Eagles, competing in the "Middleweight Bracket," will face Ball State at 12:30 p.m.

Men's college soccer: UMBC was voted to finish third in the America East Conference's preseason poll. The Retrievers went 11-6-3 last year, including a 3-2-2 conference record.

Women's college soccer: Maryland junior midfielder-defender Madison Turner, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Egyed and sophomore Cassie Phillips were named Big Ten Conference Players to Watch.

College golf: The 2017 and 2018 Big Ten men's golf championships will be played at the Five Farms East Golf Course at Baltimore Country Club, the conference announced. The 2017 Big Ten Championships will be held April 28-30, while the 2018 dates will be announced later.
