Led by two Loyola Maryland commits, Baltimore Celtic defeated Seattle United 98 Copa, 2-1, to win the under-16 boys title Sunday at the US Youth Soccer National Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Seattle United defeated Celtic, 1-0, in group play, and took an early lead in the final. Celtic responded in the 57th minute, when forward Nicolas Brown took a through ball and beat the goalkeeper at the far post. In the 74th minute, after a Celtic corner kick, forward Dominic Duncan — a rising senior who, like Brown, has pledged to the Greyhounds — converted a point-blank shot for the go-ahead goal. Basketball: Team City of Gods, featuring several players and coaches with area connections, defeated Boeheim's Army in the quarterfinals of The Basketball Tournament, 80-76, at DePaul on Saturday night. The team features Lafonte Johnson (Dunbar), James Gist (Maryland), Phil Goss (Oxon Hill), Lasan Kromah (Eleanor Roosevelt), Roscoe Smith (Walbrook), Omar Strong (Douglass), Devin Sweetney (Riverdale Baptist), Michael Sweetney (Oxon Hill) and coaches Joe Connelly III (Morgan State) and Evan Monroe (Morgan State). The team will face Overseas Elite on Saturday at Fordham in the semifinals.
Major League Soccer: Fabian Espindola scored the winning goal and had an assist, and D.C. United overcame an early two-goal deficit to beat the visiting Philadelphia Union, 3-2. Espindola's header, on a cross from Chris Korb, in the 79th minute gave United (11-7-5) its first lead. C.J. Sapong opened the scoring seconds into the match, and Sebastien Le Toux gave Philadelphia (6-12-4) a 2-0 lead in the fourth minute, but United took control from there. Alvaro Saborio, who was traded to United from Real Salt Lake on July 16, put away a right-footed shot from just outside the 6-yard box to make it 2-1 in the 37th minute, and Nick DeLeon tied the game in the 66th.
National Women's Soccer League: The host Washington Spirit (6-5-2) rallied for a 1-1 draw against the league-leading Chicago Red Stars (11-7-1) to remain undefeated at home. Christen Press scored for Chicago in the 30th minute, and Crystal Dunn tied the game in the 82nd minute on the rebound of a shot by Christine Nairn (Archbishop Spalding). Spirit forward Laura del Rio was injured in the 43rd minute and was taken to a local hospital.
