Former Terps closer Mooney (North Harford) signs with Nationals

Former Maryland closer Kevin Mooney (North Harford), a 15th-round pick of the Washington Nationals, has signed with the club, he announced on Instagram. "Officially signed a contract to play for the Washington Nationals! Thank you to everyone for the support along the way, now it's time for me to follow my dreams!" he wrote. Mooney, the Terps' all-time saves leader, would have been a senior next season. He was 3-1 with a 1.89 ERA and 11 saves in 25 appearances this past season, but had two blown saves in an NCAA tournament super-regional loss to Virginia.

Pimlico Race Course: A community-wide fundraising effort helped raise more than $65,000 for the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance during the Preakness meet, the Maryland Jockey Club announced. Events and fundraising included Canter for the Cause, an All-Female Handicapper Challenge, the raffle of a John Deere Gator, and Karaoke for the Cause. In addition to being named the sponsor of the $300,000 Pimlico Special (G3), Sagamore Racing donated $30,000 to the TAA.

Youth soccer: The Central Maryland Soccer Association is accepting team registrations for its Saturday and Sunday fall travel leagues. The league is open to all United States Soccer Federation-affiliated school, recreation travel and club-level travel teams. The Saturday league offers competition for ages 8 through 14, and the Sunday league offers competition for ages 8 through 18. Both leagues offer separate boys and girls divisions. Registration and league information is available at cmsasoccer.com. The registration deadline is Aug. 7.

College football: Navy's Fan Fest and media day will be Aug. 8 from 10 a.m. to noon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Players will sign autographs on the blue side (press box side) concourse from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. before moving down to the field to interact with the fans on the field. Fan Fest activities will include interactive inflatable games, giveaways and live music. Fans attending should enter the parking lot through Gate 5 off Taylor Avenue and enter the stadium on the Blue or press box side. There will be a $5 charge for parking, but admission to the event is free. Fans will be able to purchase football tickets and merchandise.
