Digest: Local gymnasts win U.S. women's acrobatic title

Emma Bentov-Lagman, Cristin Connerney and Lilianna Dyer of 1st Class Gymnastics Inc. in Annapolis won the women's group acrobatic gymnastics title at the USA Gymnastics Championships in Providence, R.I., with a score of 81.250. Savannah Bentley, Hannah Silverman and Elise Stickley of Emilias Acro Gymnastics and Cheer in Columbia finished second (74.967).

Since then, Dyer has teamed with Cristin Connerney and Emma Bentov-Lagman, and in the two years they have worked together, the trio has enjoyed considerable success in acrobatic gymnastics. In only their third competition as a team last May, they captured the silver medal in the Women's Group (age 13-19) at the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) ACRO World Cup in Geneva, Switzerland. Quickley, J. Smith named finalists for national U-17 team

John Carroll rising junior guard Immanuel Quickley and Mount Saint Joseph rising junior forward Jalen Smith were named finalists for the USA Basketball under-17 team that will compete at the FIBA World Championship later this summer. The 17 finalists will continue to train at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs through Friday, when the final 12-man roster is expected to be announced.The U-17 World Championship is held June 23-July 3 in Zaragoza, Spain.

Quickley was named The Baltimore Sun's All-Metro Player of the Year after he averaged 17.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.5 steals per game for the Patriots. His late 3-pointer gave John Carroll a 51-50 win over Smith and the Gaels in the Baltimore Catholic League championship.

John Carroll's Immanuel Quickley and Mount Saint Joseph's Jalen Smith are close to making the U.S. team.

Smith was not an All-Metro first- or second-team selection this winter, but he is considered one of the top recruits in the Class of 2018. The 6-foot-8, 199-pound forward is rated No. 15 in the 247Sports Composite rankings, one slot behind the 6-4, 180-pound Quickley. Also among the 17 finalists are rising senior forward Jaren Jackson Jr., a top Maryland target and the son of the former Georgetown star guard of the same name, and rising junior wing Cameron Reddish, to whom the Terps offered a scholarship in February.

Pimlico Race Course: Hall of Fame rider Edgar Prado finished second aboard Stronach Stable's Demon Buster on his 49th birthday. Prado moved his tack from Florida to Maryland in May. Prado dominated the Maryland circuit for a decade — winning 24 riding titles — before moving to New York in 1998. After riding in Maryland on Friday, Prado traveled to New York on Saturday to ride Divisidero in the Woodford Reserve Manhattan Stakes (G1) before returning to Maryland to ride Sunday. "It's good to be back in Maryland after so many years," Prado said. "It's going to take time to build business back up." Prado, who won the Kentucky Derby in 2006 aboard Barbaro, said he will continue racing in Maryland through December before deciding whether to return to Florida for the winter.

No team in Major League Lacrosse has bedeviled the Chesapeake Bayhawks more than the Rochester Rattlers.

Major League Lacrosse: Midfielder Jesse King scored six goals to lead the Rochester Rattlers (3-3) to an 18-8 victory over the Chesapeake Bayhawks (4-3) on Saturday night. The Rattlers swept the home-and-home series with the Bayhawks for the third straight season. Attackman Brendan Mundorf (UMBC) scored three goals for Chesapeake. "We didn't compete the way we needed to. It's flat-out embarrassing," Bayhawks coach Brian Reese said.

Varsity: The Officer Grant Turner Memorial Scholarship Fund awarded eight scholarships. The recipients are: Nathaniel Vance, Annapolis; Tyson Sisk-Marshall, Arundel; Allisyn Freburger, Chesapeake-AA; Airrick Powell, Glen Burnie; Kenaurd Tharpe, Old Mill; Janidy Madera, Severna Park; and Caleb Foster, South River. Turner was a member of the Maryland Transportation Authority Police Department who died in the line of duty on July 16, 2005. Since 2006, 57 scholarships have been awarded to students throughout Anne Arundel County.

Navy football: Offensive coordinator Ivin Jasper was named one of nine minority coaches to participate in the NCAA Champion Forum, a professional development program where attendees gain insight into the role of a head coach and the preparation necessary to become one. The participants will meet June 13-15 in Dallas in conjunction with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics convention. The Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern conferences selected the attendees.
