Pimlico Race Course's 37-day spring meet, highlighted by Triple Crown winner American Pharoah's victory in the Preakness, ended Saturday with sharp increases over last year in total and average handle, the Maryland Jockey Club announced. Total wagering was $207.1 million, up 25.5 percent from the 2014 spring meet, while the average handle increased 9.7 percent, from $4.706 million to $5.164 million. The total handle on Preakness Day also increased, from $83.786 million to $85.161 million. Pimlico's increases come three months after the MJC announced that the total average handle was up 14.6 percent during Laurel Park's winter meet.
Major League Soccer: Washington Mayor Muriel E. Bowser and D.C. United's owners have finalized a stadium development deal to keep the team in D.C., provided that its government secures the needed land by Sept. 30, according to multiple officials involved in negotiations. Bowser is expected to announce the deal formally today, likely ending the team's contemplation of a move to Virginia.
