Digest (April 28): Empire can't strike back against Brigade in AFL

The Baltimore Brigade (2-1) beat the Albany Empire, 52-49, Saturday afternoon at Royal Farms Arena. Brigade quarterback Randy Hippeard was named the game's MVP for his seven-touchdown performance. Defensive back Virgil Gray led the Brigade defense with 10 tackles and one interception and was named Defensive Player of the Game. Hippeard tossed his seventh touchdown of the game with just over four minutes remaining, finding wideout Quentin Sims for the second time and giving the Brigade a 52-49 lead. The Brigade defense forced and recovered a fumble in the final minute to solidify the win. The Brigade take on the defending-champion Philadelphia Soul at 7 p.m. Friday at Royal Farms Arena.



Davila, Bunce lift Stevensonto women's lacrosse victory

Sophomore Mallory Davila netted a career-high four goals while classmate Kiely Bunce (Manchester Valley) recorded her fifth hat trick of the season as Stevenson's women's lacrosse team (7-9) closed the regular season with a 17-5 MAC Commonwealth victory over visiting Widener on Saturday afternoon.


Men's college lacrosse: Visiting third-ranked Gettysburg survived a strong upset bid from Washington College to post a 15-13 win in a Centennial Conference game. Casey Grieves and Tyler Powers each scored three goals for Washington. ... Fourth-ranked Gettysburg scored the last four goals to pull away from host and 25th-ranked Washington College, 12-8.

Major League Lacrosse: Colin Heacock and Matt Abbott each had two goals and an assist to lead the Chesapeake Bayhawks to a 14-11 victory over the host Florida Launch in a Major League Lacrosse game played in Boca Raton, Fla., on Saturday night.

Men's college track and field: Coppin State's 800-meter relay team of Joseph Amoah, Keshaun Hodges, Martin Owusu-Antwi and Babadeji Balogun set a school-record, clocking a 1:24.08 to finish fifth at the Penn Relays on Saturday afternoon. Hodges, Amoah, Owusu-Antwi and Aaron Lewis took sixth in the 400 relay in 40.28.

College softball: Stevenson sophomore Morghan Fulton (C.M. Wright) tied the school's single-season record with her fourth shutout of the season while senior Brooke Steinbach (Northeast) hit her second home run of the season as the Mustangs finished MAC Commonwealth play with a doubleheader sweep over Lycoming, 4-0 and 3-1.

Colllege baseball: Alex Kriss (Calvert Hall) went 4-for-4 with three doubles, a home run and three RBIs to pace Mount St. Mary's to a 7-0 win over Sacred Heart. ... Junior second baseman Nick Dunn went 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBIs and four runs scored as Maryland evened its series with Michigan State with an 8-2 win.

National Women's Soccer League: The Washington Spirit released national team replacement player Mallory Eubanks, as Estefanía Banini and Yanara Aedo rejoined the club following the conclusion of Copa América Femenina. The Spirit host the Chicago Red Stars tonight at 7 at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
