ATH Bazzie commits to Terps' class of 2017
The Maryland football team picked up its second pledge in the Class of 2017 when Quince Orchard athlete Fofie Bazzie announced his oral commitment on Twitter on Sunday. Bazzie's announcement comes exactly a month after tight end Andrew Park from Lake Braddock in Virginia became the first commitment in next year's recruiting class. Bazzie originally was offered by Maryland on March 2, and he's the first in-state recruit in the class. He is unranked by the four major recruiting services, and 247sports.com and Rivals.com list him as a cornerback while Scout.com and ESPN list him as a wide receiver.
He's listed at about 6 feet, 180 pounds by all four services, giving him the size to play at either position at the next level. According to 247sports.com, Bazzie committed to Maryland over offers from Iowa State, Temple, Marshall, Monmouth and Old Dominion. Quince Orchard, located in Gaithersburg, is the same high school that produced Maryland defensive tackle Adam McLean.
Men's basketball: Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said he has given sophomore guard Melo Trimble, freshman center Diamond Stone junior forward Robert Carter Jr. "space" to talk with their families about their decisions on whether to enter the NBA draft but doesn't know when he will sit down with those involved. "I don't know if they'll all venture [into the draft process] or sign with an agent," Turgeon said. "Each kid is different, so we'll see." Turgeon added that "logistics and common sense says two [players] should come back, but that always doesn't come into play when kids make these decisions." … Former Maryland coach Lefty Driesell confirmed that he failed to make the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. One of 13 nominees this year, the 84-year-old coach who spent 17 seasons with the Terps and also guided three other programs to the NCAA tournament during his career failed to receive at least 18 of the 24 votes needed for selection. The Class of 2016, which will be inducted later this year in Springfield, Mass., will be introduced today at the national championship game in Houston. Among those selected are former NBA stars Yao Ming and Allen Iverson, as well as Michigan State coach Tom Izzo and former Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan.
